What is a Free Zone or a Free Trade Zone?

A Free Trade Zone in the UAE allows investors to set up or incorporate companies without having to adhere to certain restrictions that are faced by companies operating outside the free zone. For example, companies outside the free zone need to appoint a "Sponsor" in order to incorporate and do business. Companies operating inside a free zone do not need a "Sponsor." As an added incentive there are no duties and taxes to import goods into a free zone

Is that all the advantages that are available?

There are many more advantages available to investors setting up companies in the free zones.  However, the advantages vary from free zone to free zone.  For example, most free zones have ready offices with telephone, and internet connections pre-installed.  Some free zones have "hot desk" support which allows start up companies to begin operations with very little overhead costs.

What types of free zones are there?

Most of the free zones in the UAE are "general-purpose" free zones that cover trading, services, manufacturing, and distribution.  Some of the larger free zones are built around seaports and airports.  There are also free zones in the U.A.E. that cater to specific business sectors such as Semiconductor manufacture, Films and Creative Arts, Web Technologies and Internet, Healthcare, Biotechnology etc.

Which free zone is the right one for me?
